Adam Hughes says Marine are hoping to cause cup upset

Marine defender Adam Hughes says his side are hoping to cause an FA Cup First Round Proper upset as his side prepare for Colchester United test.

In their FA Cup journey so far, Marine have defeated Barnoldswick Town, Frickley Athletic, Runcorn Linnets, Nantwich Town and National League North outfit Chester.

Next in their cup run is Colchester United, who currently sit 11th in Football League Two. It’s Marine’s first appearance in the First Round Proper for 25 years.

“There’s a real buzz around the place at the minute,” said Hughes.

“All the lads can’t wait to test themselves against full-time opposition. I think it will be a very tough test, especially with them being full-time, but these are the games that you want to be involved in when the qualifying games start.

“It would be massive for everyone in and around the club if we got through to the second round.

“I know as group at the minute we believe in ourselves with the results we’ve been getting, so hopefully we can get one of them FA Cup upsets you hear of every year.”

Due to restrictions, the fixture will be played behind closed doors on Saturday, but will feature on BBC digital platforms, starting at 3:00pm.

Hughes added: “I’m gutted that there are no fans allowed. On a personal note that my family can’t be there for a big game like this, and also the fans that would’ve come down to watch.

"They have made some noise, having been involved in a few big games for the club in the past where the fans were brilliant on those occasions, but obviously everyone’s safety comes first. I’m just made up that everyone can watch the game on the BBC.”

Hughes made his 100th Marine appearance in the club’s FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round victory against Stalybridge Celtic, with the club proceeding with a 3-2 victory over the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division outfit.

“I knew I was close to playing my 100th game, but I didn’t find that out until after the game on Saturday,” said Hughes.

“Obviously it’s a big thing to have played 100 games for a club, and hopefully I can kick on again now and get more appearances for the club.

“I’ve been really enjoying my football at the minute, so hopefully this can continue moving forward here at Marine.”
