AFC Rushden & Diamonds make double signing

AFC Rushden & Diamonds have bolstered their squad with the double capture of left-back Will Summerfield and striker Dylan Edge.

Summerfield has joined the club on dual-registration from Southern League side Bedford Town.

He began his career at MK Dons but has amassed a wealth of experience across non-league level.

He is no stranger to Hayden Road, having featured against Diamonds for Bedford in a pre-season friendly back in July.

Manager Chris Nunn said: “I’ve tried to sign Will in the past but have never managed to quite get it over the line.

"The timing now is perfect, though. He’s a natural left-sided player who can play either at left-back or left wing-back which gives us options, but also gives us balance.

"It also gives us the experience we’ve been looking for in that area. He’s a great lad and I’m sure he’ll fit in well with the group. I look forward to seeing him in a Diamonds shirt very soon.”

Joining him at the club is former Corby Town forward Edge.

He only joined Corby two months ago, off the back of an impressive season at Spalding United which saw him score 17 goals for last season's beaten Pitching In NPL Midlands Division finalists.

Edge came through the ranks at King's Lynn Town and spent a number of years at his boyhood club before going on to represent Dereham Town, Swaffham Town, Thetford Town and Wisbech Town in recent seasons.

He helps add firepower in the final third following the recent loss of fellow frontman Will Jones, who suffered a serious groin injury in mid-August.

“It was clear that we needed another option at the top end of the pitch, given we’ve had lads playing through the pain barrier recently, on top of Will’s injury," Nunn said.

"To be able to get someone with Dylan’s track record in so early on in the season is a big plus for us, and he adds some more experience to our young group.

"The agreement initially is that we will take Dylan for a month or two and both ourselves, Corby and Dylan will see where we’re at at that point and go from there."

The pair made their first starts for the club in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Loughborough Dynamo.

It was a sixth straight defeat for Diamonds, who are the only team in any of the four Northern Premier League divisions yet to register a point.
