Bank Holiday Monday's First South review

By David Watters

Witton Albion and Romulus are now the only teams left in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South with 100 per cent records after Newcastle Town were beaten on Bank Holiday Monday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Something had to give though at Coles Lane as Castle travelled to Romulus. Charisma Agbonlahor gave the Roms a 20th minute lead that Jordan Cole cancelled out three minutes later. The home winner came 17 minutes from time from Chad Degville-Cross.

Witton made it four from four after a 3-1 Wincham Park success against Market Drayton Town. But Albion had to come back from being an early third minute goal down to win, thanks to Brad Bauress` penalty on the hour-mark, a Jeff Watkins own goal on 81 minutes and then Tolani Omotola a minute from time.

In contrast, Sheffield FC are the only team yet to pick up a point after Kidsgrove Athletic`s draw at Leek Town.

Club lost the derby at Bracken Moor to Stocksbridge Park Steels, where Brian Cusworth put the visitors ahead after 21 minutes. Liam McFadyen equalised five minutes later and Steels won it with Harrison Biggins` second just before half-time.

Kidsgrove took a 19th minute lead through Anthony Malbon at Harrison Park in front of 370.

Tim Grice eventually pulled Leek back on terms after 65 minutes and then Jordan Johnson put them ahead five minutes later, only for Malbon to restore parity six minutes after that.

Carlton Town recorded their first three-point haul of the season, 1-0 at Butlin Road against Rugby Town – Danny Gordon snatching victory for the visitors three minutes from time.

Bedworth United lost for the first time, 2-0 at the Dog & Duck to switched AFC Rushden & Diamonds for whom Robbie Parsons and Nic Evangelinos were on target in the opening half-hour in front of a crowd of 488.

Joining Witton, Roms and Leek in still to lose in 2016-17 are Spalding United, Shaw Lane AFC and Gresley FC.

A crowd of 317 at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields saw Spalding win the derby against Stamford AFC with a Bradley Wells brace after Ryan Robbins had given the Daniels a first-minute lead.

Shaw Lane were held to a 2-2 home draw by Northwich Victoria, who trailed 2-1 to Spencer Harris and Jason Yates goals – a Ryan Qualter own goal sandwiching them – before Yaw Gyimah equalised on 68 minutes.

Gresley were 2-1 winners at Christchurch Meadow against Belper Town in front of 319, with Pearson Mwanyongo bagging a brace either side of half-time – the second from the spot – Charlie Gatter replying on the hour-mark.

Elsewhere, Chasetown won 2-1 at Basford United with a Ryan Wynter penalty and Mitch Piggon outgunning a last-gasp Greg Simmons reply, while Jack Oldham`s 57th minute effort earned Loughborough Dynamo back-to-back holiday wins, this one at home to Lincoln United, who have yet to win.
