Basford in better shape than ever

Basford United manager Martin Carruthers is hailing his players on the eve of the new EVO-STIK League campaign after enjoying his "best ever" pre-season.

Carruthers is relishing the challenge of the 2017-18 EVO-STIK League South season after adding three new signings to an 18-man squad preparing for a trip to Belper Town on Saturday before taking on Stocksbridge Park Steels in their first home game at Greenwich Avenue on Monday night.

Before holding a light training session on Thursday night, Carruthers, pictured, told fans: "I have been delighted with our pre-season which has been the best I have been involved with since I took over as manager. The whole attitude, application and attendance of the players throughout pre season has been tremendous."

He added: "We've kept the core of our best players and with the signings of Dom Roma, Laurie Wilson and Liam Hearn we have three quality experienced players which will strengthen the team."
