Benefit match given green light

Officials at Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Bamber Bridge are looking forward to holding a benefit match for striker Greg Johnstone in the run-up to Christmas.

The striker broke his leg after scoring the first goal in their 4-1 First Division North win at Burscough on Saturday 26 October. He underwent surgery to insert a plate and screws to aid the healing process and is recovering well but will not play again until next season.

Johnston’s benefit game against Euxton Villa is set to take place on Tuesday 17 December at the QED Stadium after the club asked the Evo-Stik NPL for late permission to keep a previously free night clear after an original date of December 10 clashed with a Lancashire FA Trophy tie against Bacup & Rossendale.

Johnston has scored 13 goals since arriving midway through last season from local football. Brig say they’ve been impressed by his spirit and loyalty in attending nearly every game since his injury and hope supporters will turn out in force to help repay it.

After thanking Euxton Villa for agreeing to play them at short notice, a club spokesman said: "Greg come to all the matches to support the lads so we have arranged this benefit match against one of his former clubs. As well as the usual half-time raffle we will hold an auction after the game, with all monies raised going to Greg and his family. There are some great items in the auction so with the reduced admission price, cheap beer offer and very worthy cause, we hope fans will join us to raise money for Greg."
