Leek Town’s community workers are hosting a tournament at Harrison Park to turn youngsters off crime.

The Evo-Stik NPL First Division South side’s community arm - Leek Town Community - are organising October’s finals event after teaming up with the Moorlands Together Safer and Stronger Communities Partnership to tackle anti-social behaviour in Staffordshire Moorlands.

The finals at Harrison Park will be the climax of a new ten week coaching course at five different venues running Monday to Fridays for youngsters aged eight to 18.

The first course kicks off at 7pm next Monday [August 20] at Werrington’s Meigh Road Playing Fields. The coaches move to Cheddleton recreation Ground on Tuesday, followed by Blythe Bridge Recreation Ground on Wednesday, Brown Edge Playing Fields on Thursday and finish the week at Tean Road Recreation Ground in Cheadle.

The course’s £3,000 costs are being met by the partnership and the Blues say each class will be led by two coaches who’ve been approved by the Criminal Records Bureau. Organisers say there is no need to book in advance and that players should just turn up in good time.

Steven Kell, Leek Town community Development Manager said: "I am very excited about this new partnership as these activities are what we are all about, with the help of funding from the partnership, we can now have a big impact on the Staffordshire Moorlands Community."

The Moorlands Together Partnership was established under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 to promote community safety while reducing crime and the fear of crime. Partners include Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, Staffordshire County Council, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Staffordshire Police.
