Blues prepare to pay tribute

Leek Town

Leek Town are looking forward to taking on Leek CSOB on Sunday in a memorial match for their former skipper Chris McMullen who died of cancer last September.

McMullen, pictured, scored 30 goals in 405 appearances for the Blues as a central defender and led them out at Wembley in 1990 when they reached the final of the FA Trophy.

'Macca' also turned out for the First Division South's Old Boys and went on to manage the Blues before taking over as the club’s Chairman. Sunday's match kicks off at 2.00pm at Harrison Park and is being sponsored by Your Moorlands Housing Group.

Lee Casswell's side are looking in good shape after beating Crewe Alexandra 1-0 on Friday night thanks to an an early strike from Tim Grice.

Casswell gave debuts to new signings Andy Bratt, Ryan Dicker and John Johnston while trialist Joe Evans from Port Vale played at right-back. Tom Urwin, Steve Brannan and Matt Bradbury from last season’s squad also played along with a number of other triallists including James Brough from Ball Haye Green, Jake Green from Crewe and Sam Westray from Shrewsbury Town.

Casswell's other recent signing, Paul Donnelly from Kidsgrove Athletic, missed the match due to holiday commitments while Dan Smith, work commitments, and Ryan Connor, injury, were also notable absentees.
