Boxing Day's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

It was a good Boxing Day for Altrincham, who stretched their lead at the top of the EVO-STIK League's Premier table to five points after a 3-0 success at Marine, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Thanks to the efforts of a number of Mariners` fans to get the pitch at the Marine Travel Arena clear of standing water, the game went ahead in front of a crowd of 619.

Tom Hannigan gave the Robins the lead on the half-hour mark and nine minutes after the break, Jordan Hulme doubled the leaders` lead. And a third in the 83rd minute from Josh Hancock ensured the Robins enjoyed a good festive period.

Second-placed Shaw Lane AFC's game was postponed, as was Ashton United`s Tameside derby at home to Stalybridge Celtic, and Workington AFC in third place were held to a 2-2 draw at the Giant Axe by eleventh-placed Lancaster City.

Phil McLuckie put the Reds in front after 12 minutes, and it wasn`t until the 75th minute that the Dolly Blues pulled level through Billy Akrigg.

And parity lasted barely a minute as Conor Tinnion restored the visitors lead. But a stoppage time Charlie Bailey effort earned the hosts a point.

Warrington Town are back up to fourth after winning 2-1 at Wincham Park against eighth-placed Witton Albion.

The Wire had to come back from being a 33rd minute Will Jones goal down to win, thanks to a Tony Gray brace in the 79th and 90th minutes.

Farsley Celtic are now seventh after winning 2-1 at the Turnbull Ground against fourth-bottom Whitby Town.

Paul Walker broke the deadlock to give Farsley a 57th minute lead that Dan Cockerline added to five minutes later.

Stourbridge`s floundering league campaign continued with a narrow 1–0 defeat away at Stafford Rangers, a goal on 76 minutes from striker Massiah McDonald settling the contest in favour of the home side and sending the Glassboys to a fourth successive defeat on their travels in the league.

Bottom-markers Sutton Coldfield Town recovered from Saturday's 6-2 home battering by Witton to move level on points with second-bottom Stalybridge after sharing a 0-0 draw at the Weaver Stadium against nineteenth-placed Nantwich Town.

Third-bottom Halesowen Town were also involved in a goalless draw at The Grove against Mickleover Sports while Barwell ended a run of nine league games without a win with a 3-0 derby success at Owen Street against Coalville Town.

Matt Stenson gave the Canaries a 16th minute lead that Ed Nisevic doubled 8 minutes later. And Brady Hickey made it 3-0 in the 33rd minute.

A crowd of 578 saw Hednesford Town earn local bragging rights at Dales Lane against Rushall Olympic and move into tenth spot.

And the Pitmen had to come back from being a 19th minute Richard Brodie goal down to win, courtesy of Mason Walsh after 31 minutes and Charlie Gatter four minutes after half-time.
