Leek Town have launched a new scholarship scheme for school leavers to earn a sporting qualification and become members of the Blues Development Squad.
The news comes after Leek Town Community created a partnership with VLUK (Virtual Learning UK) to offer young players a chance to gain a Level 3 BTEC in Sport while training like scholars at professional clubs.
VLUK are one of the leading education providers in the country who already work closely with a number of Football League clubs and the Football Association to deliver football scholarship schemes.
Leek’s scholarships are open to male player aged 16-17 with a minimum of three GCSE at grades A-C and the club say candidates should be playing or aiming to play competitive football of any standard at the weekends as this is part of the course structure.
The course runs for two years and is the equivalent to gaining three A levels. Students will study for the technical side at the football club with eight hours of studies at Harrison Park in the afternoons after training led by a top quality tutor supplied by VLUK.
Successful applicants will form Leek’s Development Squad and will train together three mornings per week and play regular mid-week fixtures. Kicking off next season, the team will play in the VLUK Regional League and compete against the likes of Crewe, Port Vale and Macclesfield Town.
