Champion signed for promotion

Basford United manager Martin Carruthers believes new signing Anthony Griffiths Junior can help his EVO-STIK Northern Premier League side mount a challenge for promotion.

The versatile Griffiths Junior, pictured, will go straight into his new manager's squad for the visit of Gresley FC to Greenwich Avenue on Saturday after making the switch from Premier Division Mickleover Sports to last season's Midland League champions on Wednesday.

Carruthers said: "Anthony was an apprentice at Derby County and very highly rated. He was released and went to Barwell and Carlton, then had some time out through injury then to Mickleover, where he was instrumental in helping them win promotion last year and a key player for them this season.

"He is a utility player and can play in midfield, on the wing and up front. We have had our eye on him for a while and are now delighted he has joined us. He is a very good signing and shows our intention to challenge the leaders in the EVO-STIK Division One South."
