Charity starts at home on new show

By David Watters

Sports Traider's Martin Keech explains why volunteers and staff from the EVO-STIK League's official charity are hoping fans will be digging deep for their cause this season on Friday's new EVO-STIK NPL Show.

The special guest on the latest weekly podcast for fans, players and officials tells listeners how the funds raised from the league-wide bucket collections taking place across the EVO-STIK League on Saturday to coincide with Non-League day 2017 will be used to help disadvantaged children and young people from across the UK get involved in sport.

Recorded at the Heaton Hops in south Manchester on Thursday and released on Friday evening on the eve of NLD 2017, the latest show from the EVO-STIK League's stable of hit podcasts looks back on last weekend's action in the Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying Round and ahead to Saturday and Sunday's upcoming drama in the top flight and preliminary round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

Hosted as always by Ben Hughes, other special guests on the hour long show include Lee Picton, joint manager at top of the table cup giant-killers South Shields, Stafford Rangers boss Neil Kitching, Adam Stevens at Grantham Town and Altrincham number two Neil Sorvel.

Whitby Town Radio's Andrew Snaith is also back to preview all this weekend's matches in the EVO-STIK League Premier, along with another regular, EVO-STIK League social media manager James Heyes with the latest news on NPL50 and the public poll to name the league's top 100 player to celebrate the NPL's milestone fiftieth anniversary season.

The EVO-STIK League's stable of hit weekly and monthly podcasts returned for the 2017-18 campaign after the summer break to build on their best ever listening figures last term and an end of season surge following a series of special live broadcasts from the promotion play-offs.

Still available on iTunes as well as Audioboom and produced by the award-winning team behind FCUM Radio, the podcasts are being sponsored for the fourth season running by the NPL's title sponsors EVO-STIK and since last season have also been available via their own button on the right hand side of the home page of the league's official website.

Saturday's bucket collections on the eighth running of Non-League Day are kicking off a season of fundraising for Sports Traider and mark the official start of collections of unwanted kit and sporting equipment for the charity to put to good use.

Sports Traider was founded in Bedford nearly a decade ago in 2009 by Lance Haggith who was named 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero for getting the charity off the ground and the early impact it made. Put simply, the charity aims to make clothing and sports equipment affordable to all, and at the same time generate a sustainable source of funding to help disadvantaged youngsters participate in sport.

Apart from their growing number of permanent collection points and recycling banks for unwanted sports kit and equipment in strategic locations and links with schools and sports centres around the country, Sports Traider also works with local sports brands and retail outlets who are invited to donate surplus, end-of-line or seconds stock directly.

For more information on the charity's work, visit the home page on league’s official website and click on the Sports Traider button. Alternatively, visit the charity’s website at www.sportstraider.org.uk.
