City are still winning the right way

By David Watters

Lancaster City are in the running to help the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League carry on dominating the Football Association's annual Respect Awards after being unveiled as the league's best behaved side over the 2016-17 season.

Proud officials at the EVO-STIK NPL First Division North champions are are looking forward to bringing the President's Cup back from June's annual awards night in Blackpool after their disciplinary record was confirmed as the best among all 68 clubs.

Three-time winners of the monthly Fair Play accolades this season, the overall sporting champions know all about the FA’s annual Respect accolades having won the National League System Step 1-4 Respect and Fair Play Club Award in 2011.

After Rugby Town continued the EVO-STIK NPL's monopoly of the club award in 2016 with a seventh straight win since Garforth Town collected the inaugural honours in 2010, the Dolly Blues are now well placed to make it eight in a row when the 2017 winners are announced by the FA this summer.

The EVO-STIK NPL itself will also be hoping to continue its tradition of doing the 'Respect Double' in 2017 by beating the Isthmian, Southern and National leagues to the crown of the best behaved competition in the top levels of Non-League football for the seventh time since the awards were established.

The Dolly Blues will also collect a glass trophy and share in more than £5,000 in prize money with the five other EVO-STIK NPL clubs who flew the flag for fair play and sportsmanship over the 2016-17 campaign at the Hilton Hotel in Blackpool on Saturday June 17.

Like Stourbridge in the top flight for the second year running and Lincoln United in EVO-STIK NPL First Division South, Phil Brown's side will bank £1,000 as divisional winners.

EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division runners-up and promotion play-off winners Spennymoor Town will bid goodbye to the EVO-STIK NPL with a cheque for £500 as runners-up along with Clitheroe and Kidsgrove Athletic in EVO-STIK NPL First Division North and South respectively.

The clubs behind them in third place in the tables after collecting the fewest cards and the highest marks from match officials in EVO-STIK NPL fixtures for their touchline teams where tied on points, Matlock Town, Tadcaster Albion and EVO-STIK NPL First Division South play-off winners Witton Albion, will leave Blackpool with cheques for £250 as a reward for their efforts.

Officials at Giant Axe hailed their squad and management after being recognised for winning their title and promotion "the right way".

The club said: "Lancaster City have not only taken the divisional award in the Fair Play tables but have also topped the table across all three divisions. More silverware to display and congratulations go to Phil, Macca and all the team for their professional approach throughout the season which has resulted in the winning of this award. Well deserved!"
