Classy Macclesfield advance in FA Trophy

Macclesfield are the only Northern Premier League side left standing in the FA Trophy after sweeping aside higher-level opposition to ease into the last 16 of the competition.

The Silkmen were handed a difficult-looking fourth round home tie against Dorking Wanderers, currently 19th in the National League.

However, they turned on the style with some fine finishing in front of a crowd of almost 2,000 at the Leasing.com Stadium.

With 27 minutes gone, Tunde Owolabi fired beyond Dorking goalkeeper Harrison Male at his near post, bagging his first goal since joining the club at the end of December.

Alex Curran doubled their advantage before half-time, then Owolabi added his second on the hour mark to give the hosts some breathing space.

A blistering 10-minute spell heading into the final quarter saw Paul Dawson and Luke Duffy also add their names to the scoresheet as the hosts racked up an unassailable lead.

Manager Alex Bruce, who has been in charge since the end of October when he replaced Mark Duffy, hailed Saturday's win as a "complete performance" from his side.

"That's what we're capable of," he said post-match.

"That's why when we have results like we had last week [a 2-1 home defeat to Lancaster City], we all get frustrated.

"It's about managing that frustration. They've set the standard now, and I thought we were outstanding to a man. It was a joy to watch, and I think everyone could see that."

Macclesfield will learn their last 16 fate when the draw for the next round is made on Monday afternoon at 3:15pm, live on talkSPORT 2.

Bruce's side will be flying the flag for the Northern Premier League, with their two Step 3 and 4 counterparts, Radcliffe and Nantwich Town, bowing out in the fourth round.

Despite taking the lead in their match, league leaders Radcliffe were beaten 2-1 by National League Barnet.

The Bees' goals came courtesy of Marvin Armstrong either side of half-time, cancelling out Anthony Dudley's arrowed 38th minute opener for the Boro.

Another of the sides vying for promotion to the Football League this season, Solihull Moors eased past NPL West Division side Nantwich Town.

Moors were 5-1 winners against the Dabbers, who exited the competition with a goal to their name as Paddy Kay grabbed a consolation six minutes from time.
