Corks popping but title is priority

Basford United manager Martin Carruthers was setting his sights on the EVO-STIK League South title within minutes of seeing his side secure promotion on Saturday.

Carruthers turned his attentions to the seven points the Nottingham-based club still needs from seven remaining fixtures in EVO-STIK League South, starting with a trip to Lincoln United on Monday, after taking the point they needed from a 1-1 draw with nearest rivals Alvechurch at Greenwich Avenue to guarantee going up.

The Basford boss declared: "We're promoted now but we still want to go out and win our remaining games and get the title."

Alvechurch are now a massive 18 points behind Basford who are now aiming to follow in the footsteps of Southern League Taunton Town by becoming one of the few champions in Non-League with nearly a month of the 2017-18 season still to go.

Basford United chairman Chris Munroe used his Twitter account @chrismunroe52 to hail Carruthers and everybody else connected with their promotion and success so far.

He tweeted: "Massive congratulations to our @Basfordutdfc mgt & players & backroom & all staff. Great character to get the point today & i am immensely proud tonight as a culmination of a dream of @evostikleague premier football back from 2011 when we started this project. More to go."
