Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Ashton United's long-serving Director Mick Cummings drew on his own personal history to celebrate their first ever league meeting with King's Lynn Town by helping to commemorate the greatest FA Cup run in The Linnets’ history, writes Jez Sayle.
Back in 1961-62, Cummings was on the groundstaff at First Division Everton when The Toffees were drawn at home to Non-League King's Lynn. En-route to their Goodison clash, Lynn had beaten Coventry City, who promptly sacked their manager Bill Frith and appointed a certain Jimmy Hill to the vacancy.
Although The Linnets lost 4-0 at Goodison, reaching the FA Cup's Third Round for the only time in their history remains one of their proudest achievements. So to mark the first meeting of the clubs in the Evo-Stik NPL's top flight the Robins Director had a programme he'd kept mounted and framed before Ashton President Ronnie Thomasson made the presentation to officals at The Walks before last Saturday's 2-1 win for King's Lynn Town.
