Dolly Blues are sporting champions!

By David Watters

Lancaster City are the Frank Whittle Partnership-sponsored fair play kings of the Northern Premier League's fiftieth anniversary 2017-18 season!

Named on Friday as the campaign's most sporting side after topping the fair play tables across all three divisions for the second season running, the EVO-STIK League North club's proud management and officials will be presented with the President's Cup as the competition's best behaved side when they are crowned at the NPL's end of season awards night.

Along with the Dolly Blues, eight more clubs will also celebrate a sporting windfall at Blackpool's Hilton Hotel in June thanks to the £5,000 in prize money the NPL hands annually to promote sportsmanship and fair play and back the Football Association's Respect campaign.

Like South Shields and Leek Town in EVO-STIK League North and South respectively, the Dolly Blues will bank a cheque for £1000 for topping their division's fair play table. As in previous seasons, the runners-up in all three divisions will collect £500 and the third-placed clubs £250.

Witton Albion were City's closest rivals in the Premier Division to take second place with Workington third. In EVO-STIK League North, Tadcaster Albion and Scarborough Athletic were second and third while Corby Town pipped Alvechurch to the runners-up spot in EVO-STIK League South.

The 2017-18 season's fair play awards and prize money were confirmed on Friday after the NPL unveiled the final fair play kings of the season, April winners Lancaster City, Leek Town and Goole AFC.

All three topped the fair tables generated by a totting up of red and yellow cards divided by the number of fixtures clubs played over the last four week. Clubs must play at least four league games to be eligible for the monthly honours and where tied on points, marks awarded by referees for behaviour in the technical area by managers and coaches are taken into account.

With Phil Brown at the helm, the fair play champions at the Giant Axe won their third and final monthly accolade on the way to winning the overall award after collecting just two cautions in eight outings to top the EVO-STIK League Premier Division's fair play table with a disciplinary score of 0.25.

Leek Town under the guidance of manager Neil Baker ensured they headed the final standings in EVO-STIK League South by earning a third monthly accolade following previous wins in September and October with the disciplinary score of 0.40 they posted for two cautions in five fixtures.

Goole and manager Karl Rose are leaving the NPL following relegation from EVO-STIK League North and the Vikings will wave goodbye on high as the division’s best behaved club after collecting six cautions in six outings to record a score of 1.00.

Preston-based FWP stepped up their support for the EVO-STIK League for the milestone anniversary season to build on their 10 years of work as existing sponsors and partners. As well as backing the EVO-STIK League's fair play mission on the pitch, the sponsors are rolling out a series of initiatives off it for all 68 clubs.

Focusing on stadium development, they've include an online survey of the needs of clubs and regular updates on the latest industry news and schemes. Representatives from member clubs are also getting the chance to meet up with FWP's experts at a number of planned seminars this summer and at annual showcase for sponsors and partners before the end of season awards night.
