Doodson Sport Cup action review

The Doodson Sport Cup

A handful of outstanding Doodson Sport Cup ties were finally completed after the festive period, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South side Stafford Rangers held Premier Division Rushall Olympic to a 2-2 draw in normal time in their delayed second round tie at Marston Road before bowing out on penalties.

Stanley Mugisha gave the Pics a 34th minute lead that they held right until 19 minutes from time when Alex Curtis equalised.

But late drama saw Jake Heath restore the visitors lead with just two minutes to go, only for Curtis to grab his second of the game less than a minute later to force spot-kicks, which went 6-5 to the visitors in the end.

There were also two third round ties, one of which produced an 'upset' as First Division South hosts Spalding United beat Premier Division Barwell to take the Tulips into the quarter-finals.

With the match finely balanced at 2-1 after Andy Tidswell and Mitch Griffiths had opened the home side's account on 17 and 24 minutes, Guy Hadland having pulled one back in the 64th minute, killer strikes by Tidswell and Lewis Webb finally put the tie to bed in the 87th and 89th minutes respectively.

The other tie saw Spalding's league rivals Lincoln United bow out at Premier Division Ilkeston FC.

Michael Williams broke the deadlock to give the Robins a 69th minute lead that Michael Jacklin cancelled out less than a minute later. But Dave Morgan popped up to ensure there was to be no upset with an 87th minute winner for the Robins.
