Double delight for Nantwich Town

Nantwich Town have brought in experienced midfielder Steven Hewitt and defender Carl Dickinson.

Starting out at Burnley as a youth player, Hewitt made a few league appearances for the Clarets before moving on to Chester and Southport.

A spell at Accrington Stanley followed, before some time in Wales with both Bangor City and Aberystwyth, either side of a stint in Australia for Hume City.

Most recently, the 29-year-old has been at Wythenshawe Town, where this season he has scored three times in 23 appearances in all competitions.

Hewitt is no stranger to head coach Gary Taylor-Fletcher, having played with him at Accrington and then for him at Bangor.

On his arrival, Taylor-Fletcher said: “I’ve been trying to bring him in since we first got the job but we weren’t able to. Now he’s here, the quality he’s going to add to the squad is going to give us a big improvement.

“We needed another body in midfield with others not fully fit, so to get someone like Stevie in is unbelievable.”

The second new face at the club is the vastly experienced Dickinson, who has made over 400 Football League appearances throughout his career.

Starting at Stoke City in the squad that reached the Premier League, the defender subsequently played at Barnsley, Portsmouth and Watford among others, before settling at Port Vale for three seasons and featuring nearly 150 times for the club.

Spells at Notts County and Yeovil followed, then in 2021 he made his first step into coaching as player/manager at Hanley Town.

He helped them win promotion to the Pitching In NPL West Division last season, and was most recently with Stratford Town.

Dabbers manager Ritchie Sutton said: “We tried to get Dicko in a few months ago but it wasn’t possible. Things have changed now, and I feel that experienced head at the back, being a talker and a leader, is someone that we’ve been missing.

“He’s a winner, he’s had a fantastic career and knows the game brilliantly. Most importantly, he demands a lot from his team-mates.

“He’ll get more out of ones that he feels aren’t pulling their weight, so I feel that’s exactly the kind of character we need around the dressing room and on the pitch.”
