Dream coming true for chairman

Basford United chairman Chris Monroe reckons he was lost for words when he heard that the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club's dream of playing on 3G at Greenwich Avenue would soon become a reality.

Munroe, pictured, and delighted officials at the First Division South high-flyers were celebrating this week after the Football Foundation, Notts FA and other significant partners including Nottingham City Council and the Environmental agency, agreed to back a £600,000 project which will see the main pitch opened up to users of all age groups for community use.

Greenwich Avenue is also home to Bulwell FC and Nottingham Forest Ladies and Munroe is looking forward to the new 3G pitch becoming a hub for community use with the installation expected to be completed over the summer in time for the start of next season.

Munroe, who has been working on the project for the last 18 months, said: “Words cannot express how delighted and thankful the community football club is to the Football Foundation and the Notts FA in supporting us in this project. It is fabulous for the football community and will be a significant project in grassroots, adult, youth and academy football in Nottingham.

"We have so much belief and excitement to deliver the football development plan that was significant in securing this funding for the inner city area of Basford on the suburbs of Nottingham."

Basford's home already boasts four full-size grass pitches, including the floodlit main stadia pitch, a nine-a-side pitch and a five-a-side pitch. Eight changing rooms, four rooms for officials, two classrooms and a clubroom with kitchen and bar at the ground were funded through a Football Foundation grant in April 2013.
