Easter Monday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

With Blyth Spartans already crowned champions of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division, all Easter Monday eyes were focused on who would go up alongside them in the play-offs, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Second-placed Spennymoor Town and third-placed Stourbridge are now assured of their end-of-season games, while the remaining two spots are between Nantwich Town, Workington AFC and Buxton, with Grantham Town as outsiders.

Spennymoor look like finishing as runners-up after a 2-0 win at Westfield Lane against a Frickley Athletic side whose relegation was confirmed as a consequence.

Andy Johnson after 10 minutes and then Nathan Fisher eight minutes from time condemned the Blues to join Skelmersdale United and Ilkeston FC in dropping down a division.

Stourbridge secured a play-off place with an ultimately comfortable win against Black Country neighbours Rushall Olympic.

A first half penalty from Luke Benbow and a well-taken goal from Ethan Jones shortly after the break sealed the win that means Stourbridge moved up to third, above Nantwich, and are assured of their play-off spot with a game still to play.

Defeats for Whitby Town and Grantham mean that they can no longer catch the Glassboys. However, there is still much to play for in the final league game of the season at home to fourth-placed Nantwich.

The Dabbers could return to third with a win in the game in hand on Thursday night at Halesowen Town but if Stourbridge win next Saturday it would guarantee a third-place finish at the very least, and with it a home semi-final.

It is still possible for Stourbridge to finish anywhere between second and fifth, depending on the outcome of the remaining fixtures.

Nantwich are now all-but there, despite their 1-0 Weaver Stadium defeat to Workington, for whom Jack Ryan scored five minutes before the break.

Buxton are two points behind Workington in sixth but a 2-1 home win against neighbours Matlock Town kept them in with a shout going into the final game.

Bradley Grayson proved to be the Bucks hero, bagging a brace in the 15th and 29th minutes. Gladiators` top marksman Marcus Dinanga replied just shy of the hour-mark, but it wasn`t enough.

Starting the day in fifth place, Grantham`s play-off hopes took a big blow against relegation-threatened Corby Town.

On 21 minutes Corby were in front when Aaron Brown headed home at the back post from a corner and they doubled it on the hour-mark when Steve Leslie converted a penalty. And the Steelmen got a third on 71 minutes from a long free-kick on the edge of the pitch which evaded everyone.

The Gingerbreads could still make the play-offs but Workington only need a point from their final two matches. With Frickley becoming the third side to be relegated, it`s now down to a straight battle between fourth-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town and fifth-bottom Corby as to who joins them.

Nathaniel Kelly notched a vital goal for the Royals seven minutes from time in the derby at Coles Lane against Halesowen Town and they are level on points with the Steelmen, who have a much better goal difference.

Elsewhere on Easter Monday, a crown of 772 saw Hednesford Town go down 2-0 at Keys Park to neighbouring Stafford Rangers, whose Jack Sherratt after 40 minutes and Izak Reid eight minutes from time were on target.

Brady Hickey scored the only goal 12 minutes from time to secure Barwell Leicestershire bragging rights at Kirkby Road against Coalville Town, while Ilkeston`s Max Thornberry`s 25th minute own goal sealed Mickleover Sports` win at the New Manor Ground.

Marine AFC won the derby at Stormy Corner against Skelmersdale with a brace from Danny Mitchley in the third and 64th minutes, sandwiched by a 37th minute Matt Hamilton effort.

Warrington Town and Ashton United shared a 1-1 Cantilever Park draw in which Matty Chadwick`s 12th minute opener for the visitors was eventually cancelled out by Michael Bakare two minutes from the end.

And champions Blyth`s penultimate game ended up being a 5-1 hammering of north east rivals Whitby Town at Croft Park in front of a crowd of 772.

Luke Armstrong bagged a brace, Daniel Maguire, Dave McTiernan and Matty Pattison singles, while Dale Hopson netted a late consolation for the Seasiders.
