Ossett Albion

Elvis Presley is alive and well and playing in goal in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League!

Astonished fans at Ossett Albion legends match must have wondered, even for a spilt second, when Unicorns official Jimmy McGinty rode to the rescue after a desperate tannoy plea for a substitute keeper during the match to mark the Football Association's new Sir Bobby Robson National Football Day.

Dressed in full costume as the late King of Rock'n'Roll, McGinty ran out at Dimple Wells with Presley's hit Hound Dog ringing around the ground. And McGinty, a member of the Unicorn's club Committee, showed his alter ego can play a bit too in front of supporters attending the family fun day and clash between Jimmy Martin’s Albion Legends and Paul Riordan’s Albion Select XI.

Riordan's XI were trailing 2-1 when veteran keeper Nigel Yarrow was crocked and the Unicorns official made his star-studded entry. With Martin's XI threatening to overwhelm his new team-mates after earlier strikes from Danny Day and Mark Stephenson, and a reply from Gareth Hamlet only keeping them in touch, McGinty, pictured, stood firm between the posts to keep a clean sheet.

Fans helped raised more than £200 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation during the First Division North outfit's day of celebrations for the late footballing Knight with McGinty later going in goal for a penalty shoot-out for delighted youngsters. On-field attractions also included a round robin juniors tournament and crossbar challenge along with a demonstration of keeper coaching by Paul Heritage of Just4Keepers.

Albion Chairman Steve Hanks hailed a great day for fans at Dimple Wells which saw match balls and training tops provided by the FA via The West Riding CFA.

He said: "It has been a fantastic day and I am sure everyone has enjoyed themselves. The crowd went wild when Elvis appeared in the tunnel and in all my years in football I've never seen anything like it. All he needed was a pair of blue suede gloves!

"It was a fantastic end to an entertaining day and definitely one of the highlights. We have raised just over £200 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Ossett Albion are rounding up the figure to £250. I would like to thank everyone who helped and contributed in any way to make this event a tremendous success."

Junior winners at event included Joey from Ossett Albion Juniors who won the Crossbar Challenge and India Dooley who took home a cuddly toy for the nearest guess to how much was in the club's Development Jar. Mike Webster of Tate’s Solicitors, who sponsor the Unicorns' Under 8s, presented medals to the junior tournament's players and a Nike match ball each to the joint 'Players of the Tournament'.
