Emley's Cup heroics remembered?

FA Cup Third Round

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier might not have any representatives left in the FA Cup this weekend but Emley's heroics 15 years ago should warrant a mention in dispatches at least in media coverage of the Third Round.

The Yorkshire part-timers, representing the then Unibond Northern Premier League, took more than 2,000 fans to West Ham in January 1998 and came within eight minutes of securing a replay, John Hartson dashing their dreams with his 82nd minute goal in a 2-1 win at Upton Park.

Frank Lamapard had put the Premier League side ahead before hairdresser's supervisor Paul David equalised on 56 minutes for the Premier Divsion outfit.

Emley's famous run to the Third Round captured the nation's hearts and will certainly be remembered at Evo-Stik NPL First Division North Wakefield. In 2003 Emley moved out of the village to play in Wakefield and after a series of name changes in the following years today's club emerged.

However, they won't be the only club remembering the heroics of 1998. In 2005 fans still living in Emley formed a new club, AFC Emley. They kicked off life in the West Yorkshire League and now play in Division One of the Northern Counties East League after winning promotion.
