England star on comeback trail

Ossett Albion manager Richard Tracey will be a happy man if England youth international George Green can rekindle his career in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League.

The 19-year-old midfielder signed for the Unicorns until the end of the season on Tuesday before making an immediate impact and helping Tracey's side beat First Division North rivals Mossley 3-2 in the Integro Doodson League Cup at Queen's Terrace.

Green, pictured, signed for Everton at the age of 15 from Bradford City in a deal worth up to £2 million despite interest at the time from Tottenham and Bayern Munich. After a loan spell at Tranmere last season he was released by the Toffees in the summer. After four years with the Premier League giants, he was snapped up on a two year deal at Oldham Athletic less than a week later.

Tracey has known Green since teaching him at school. After seeing him go on to represent England at U16, U17 and U18 levels before his recent release by League One Latics, the Unicorns manager is hoping his former pupil's arrival pays off for both parties, however long or short his stay.

A through ball from the playmaker on his debut led to Albion's second goal against the Lilywhites and a delighted Tracey said: "George is a magnificent capture for our club and a lot a hard work has gone into this over the last week. It shows how far we have moved forward in the three years that we have been leading the club in terms of attracting players.

"I have known George for nine years, ever since I was his PE teacher at my previous school, but we are both also from the same town. This really helped in the decision process for George who just wants to get back playing and enjoying football over the coming months before deciding where his long term future lies.

"He's had a tough year but gained first team experience at Tranmere and we will do everything we can to help him move forward again. In the meantime he will be a major asset to us here."
