Evans - "No points target for Roms"

Romulus update, by Andy Mitchell

ROMULUS boss Richard Evans refused to set a points target for Evo-Stik NPL survival this week, but maintained that his side would gather enough points to beat the drop.

After a goalless draw against Stamford at the weekend, fourth-bottom Roms lost 3-0 at Leek Town on Tuesday night and have struggled for goals since the departure of Marvin Johnson to Kidderminster Harriers at the end of January.

Evans’ troops have scored just once in their six games since, and have only won once since the end of November, a run that spans 16 matches. Romulus are however still 10 points clear of Shepshed Dynamo and 11 ahead of Quorn in the relegation places.

Asked if he thought the bottom two could catch up, the beleaguered boss said: “We will pick up points over the next seven games – we’re just going to take each game as it comes and set our team up right to win games.

“We’re not used to relegation battles, but we’re not going to set targets – we’ve seen sides go down from this level on 40-odd points, yet others have stayed up on about 22 – targets are irrelevant, we’ve just got to focus on what we’re doing.”

The Roms are without a game this week while Evans confirmed that he is looking for a striker during their enforced break.

“We are looking for a forward – there is nothing concrete set up at the moment, but we’ll be looking at one or two different avenues as we need some results.

“We’re expecting some movement before our next game against Coalville (next Saturday).”

There has already been some transfer activity this week with goalkeeper Chris Jay returning to former club Coleshill Town.

Coming in are former Roms defender Luke Edwards, who has warmed the bench having returned from spells with Daventry Town and Sutton Coldfield and young winger Nathan Demonte from Daventry, who made his debut at Leek on Tuesday.

Evans said: “Nathan did well and worked hard and it is up to him now to keep his place – we need crosses and goals from those areas and hopefully he can provide that for us.”
