Ex-Gingerbread enters hall of fame

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Grantham Town have congratulated their European Cup winning former manager and player John Robertson on his induction into the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame.

Dubbed the "Picasso of our game" by Brian Clough after winning the European Cup twice with legendary Nottingham Forest boss in 1979 and 1980, the mercurially talented Scot was recognised for his stunning achievements as a player at a glittering ceremony in Manchester last Wednesday

Now 63, the winger moved into Non-League for a brief spell at Corby Town after collecting 28 caps as an international and scoring eight times for his country. Upon arriving at Grantham in 1987 with Martin O'Neill as his playing assistant manager, Robertson, who also played for Stamford, made 19 appearances for the Gingerbreads.

After following Republic of Ireland manager O'Neill to Shepshed Charterhouse he returned to manage the EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division club himself in February 1990, his time at the helm spanning the period from the end of the club's stay at London Road to groundsharing at Spalding and the first few months at The Meres in 1992.

Robertson returned to his job as O'Neill's right-hand man afer leaving, firstly at Wycombe Wanderers and then Norwich City as a coach and scout before moving on to Leicester City and Glasgow Celtic as assistant manager and coach.

In 2003, O'Neill and Robertson led Celtic to the UEFA Cup final, eventually losing to Porto, before working together again for four more years at Aston Villa from 2006 to 2010.
