Ex-Whitby Town defender makes National League North move

By James Gordon

Whitby Town have confirmed that defender Jassem Sukar has joined National League North side Darlington, subject to approval by the FA and the National League.

Sukar, 25, scored twice in 142 appearances for the Blues as they finished just outside the Pitching In NPL Premier Division play-offs last season.

He will reunite at the Quakers with former team-mate and last season’s NPL top scorer Jacob Hazel, who made the move to The Darlington Arena following the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign.

Sukar came through the academy ranks at Sunderland before going on to ply his trade in Scotland, joining Dundee United before embarking on loan spells at Arbroath, Peterhead and Brechin City.

After a brief spell with York City, the left-back joined Whitby and enjoyed four seasons at the club, but will now move onto pastures new after becoming a free agent following the completion of his contract in May.

Darlington manager Alun Armstrong said; “He’s a six foot, tough, aggressive, defensively-minded left-back who can also play left centre-half, so he will be a useful member of the squad.

“He came up to Blyth a few years back when he left York but he wasn’t quite ready.

“We’ve always kept an eye on him and he went and established himself in the league below with Whitby where he’s done very well and has been one of their most consistent performers.”

Sukar added: “It’s an opportunity that came up and I couldn’t turn it down. It’s a massive club with a great fan base and huge ambition.

“There’s expectation that comes with that, but I feel like I’m at the point in my career now where I’m ready to push on again. I feel like this is a great place for me to do so.”
