FA Trophy Preview: Basford after Stafford revenge

By James Gordon

The FA Trophy continues this weekend for its second qualifying round.

There are 19 EVO-STIK League sides in action, while Wisbech Town are playing in a first qualifying round replay against Yaxley with Ramsbottom United lying in wait on Tuesday night.

EVO-STIK League Premier Division side Basford United host league rivals Stafford, and they will be out to avenge their loss to them in the league earlier this season.

Boss Martin Carruthers said: He said: “We have a score to settle with Stafford.   They beat us 3-1 at their place earlier in the season and it wasn’t our best performance, we allowed them to bully us all over the pitch.

“We are now playing really well, having won our last five games and confidence is high.  The team need to show that that night did not represent what we are about.

“Stafford have some good players, we cannot allow them to dictate the game, we need to impose ourselves on the game and play it our way, we have the quality in our side to do that.”

Prescot Cables’ reward for upsetting Warrington Town in the last round is a trip to former NPL side Halesowen Town, now plying their trade in the Southern Central League.

There are two all-EVO STIK League Premier Division clashes at South Shields and Stalybridge Celtic, as they host Hyde United and Buxton respectively.

East Division high-flyers Marske United, unbeaten at home in the league all season, host National League North side Tamworth, who were finalists back in 2003 and were knocked out of the competition by NPL opponents last season.

AFC Mansfield host East Division rivals Pickering Town, who met on the opening day of the season, with Mansfield winning 2-1.

Farsley and Lancaster will be hoping to avoid upsets against lower league Carlton Town and Ossett United respectively, while Workington face a tricky trip to West Division side Newcastle Town.

Witton Albion, who enjoyed a run to the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup, go up against fellow step 3 side AFC Rushden & Diamonds, now plying their trade in the Southern League Central Premier Division.
