Fans fighting Ebola tackling virtual trek!

Leek Town

Long-time Leek Town supporter Andrew Carp and his friend Dan Wood are getting on their bikes to raise cash for to fight the Ebola crisis – without travelling anywhere!

The EVO-STIK Northern Premier League fans are currently cycling 500 miles between them on exercise bikes at Future Fitness in Leek with the target of raising at least £5,000 for Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF), one of the charities supplying doctors and nurses to fight the deadly disease in West Africa.

Their 500-mile sponsored trip to nowhere started in late November and is expected to take the duo several weeks to complete over the festive period. To boost their efforts, officials at the First Division South club are also planning to hold a bucket collection during the Boxing Day game against Newcastle Town at Harrison Park and urging other fans to give generously.

Carp said: "We decided to raise money to help the Ebola crisis because these doctors and nurses are working in incredible conditions out there. These are the people on the ground, who flagged Ebola up as a major issue.

"The money we raise will help to pay for food and water as well as the much-needed protective clothing. Africa is a huge continent with great potential but this is an occasion when Africa needs help as well as medics who risk their lives to save others."

He added: "However, this is not just about bad news - we want to show people what wonderful countryside we would be going through if we were there."
