Midfielder finally reaches milestone

By David Watters

Leon Broadhurst finally got to make his six hundredth appearance for EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Stourbridge on Saturday.

Thanks to the double postponement of his team's third round clash in the FA Trophy at Nantwich Town, the 31-year-old reached the milestone in front of the club's home support during their 2-0 win over Colwyn Bay in the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight.

Now in his third spell at the War Memorial Athletic Ground after returning from a short spell at Leamington, the former Bromsgrove Rovers and Fairfield Villa midfielder turned defender has also scored more than a hundred goals for the Premier Division club since first joining them in 2003.

To mark Broadhurst's achievements, the Glassboys ran a special feature in Saturday's matchday programme looking back on his time with them before honouring him with a special presentation in front of their fans after the victory.

A club spokesman said: "We are delighted and proud, therefore, to be able to mark Leon’s fantastic achievement.

"Leon has been a wonderful servant to the club and has been part of almost all of our most memorable moments, including the 2008 Southern League Midland Division Play-Off Final victory at Leamington, in which he scored the winning goal near the end of extra-time, as well as all three of our FA Cup runs to the Second Round."

As well as honouring the player for his loyalty over the years, the Glassboys also organised a bucket collection for Broadhurst and his wife Emma who are running the 2016 London Marathon on Sunday 24 April in aid of the charity Children With Cancer UK.

Supporters who were unable to attend can also donate at an online fundraising page the couple have set up at: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=Broadhurstborntorun-SAVMLMBONDS3332016-3999.
