Five minutes from a club record win

Gainsborough Trinity were five minutes away from making club history on Tuesday night.

After 85 minutes of their FA Cup first round qualifying replay against Chasetown at The Northolme, they led 8-0 and were on course to beat the previous club best of 7-0 - achieved against both Fleetwood Town and Great Harwood Town.

But two late goals by their EVO-STIK League West visitors meant the full-time score was “only” 8-2, which was still a club record for goals scored in a game.

Boss Lee Sinnott told the BBC after the game: “We did mention it on the touchline, we wondered what it was! The main priority was getting through to the next round, whether it was 1-0 or otherwise, we’ve just happened to accumulate goals.

“It was a very good performance. There were similarities from our point of view at times to Saturday (1-1 in the first tie), the difference was that we didn’t put the ball in to the back of the net.

“We talked about having a better tempo, a better conversion rate, and I’m not sure how many efforts we had, but the conversion rate was good and that’s what we’re looking to do.

“The fans have been spoilt so far. They have a goal of the season competition, and we’re not out of September yet, and you’ve already got probably seven really good contenders.

“We give the players a license to express themselves and play football, it’s up to us to make sure the hunger is there and keep drumming that in to them.

“We’re six games unbeaten now and that’s a habit you want to keep.”

Gainsborough, who have reached the FA Cup first round proper on two occasions in recent years, now face a trip to Halesowen Town in the second qualifying round on Saturday September 22.
