Five star takeover should inspire all top players

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League is hoping the proposed takeover of Salford City by five members of Manchester United's famous 'Class of '92' will inspire other top level players to follow their example and invest in the future of Non-League football.

Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt started making worldwide headlines on Thursday after agreeing to invest in the First Division North’s Ammies, a deal still subject to approval by the Football Association and the Evo-Stik NPL before they formally take over at Moor Lane, pictured, in the summer.

The five – all members of the United’s FA Youth Cup wining side of 1992 with more than 3,000 appearances between them – are vowing to establish an academy at the club to nurture talented young footballers in the North West.

Their aim to focus on youth development is being hailed by the Evo-Stik NPL’s officials as an ideal template for the rest of the game’s stars to copy with many other top players owing a debt to their local Non-League clubs for aiding their own careers.

Evo-Stik NPL Chairman Mark Harris said: "The news is fantastic for Salford City and for everyone in Non-League football. It sets a tremendous example to others. The Evo-Stik NPL applauds the decision of these Premier League stars to put something back into the game.

"They have already indicated that their focus is on youth development and we look forward to working with them to achieve their objectives."

Salford City Chairman Karen Baird was instrumental in the deal and she believes the benefits will be felt by the Ammies and their wider community for years to come.

Baird said: "It is an exciting time for Salford City FC and I believe there are many more great achievements to come for the club. Without a doubt this deal will result in a very bright future ahead and is a great advert for Non-League football.

"The club are in full support of the group and believe it to be a very positive move both for Salford City FC and the City of Salford itself."
