New Evo-Stik NPL outfit Ramsbottom United are appealing for volunteers to come forward today after their pitch was flooded.

The Harry Williams Rivereside Stadium was left under two feet of water this morning following flooding across the Midlands and North West on Saturday.

The First Division North club’s spokesman, Alan Michaelovitz, said: “It's not looking good. Thankfully though, the water does seem to be receding slowly so lets just hope the rain stays away long enough to allow the ground to recover.”

Michaelovitz, who also said their neighbouring cricket ground and many local properties were under water, revealed: "It wasn't just the football ground which took a battering - the neighbouring cricket ground was also completely flooded out, leaving them with just ducks to watch when they were scheduled to be playing in the Lancashire League.”

He added: “It is the first time the ground has flooded in around six years but the extremely heavy rains which besieged the North West on Friday saw the River Irwell break its banks at the bottom end and flood the football ground. The bottom end of the ground was under two feet of water this morning, although it is very slowly going away but the flooding did reach and get into the two changing rooms and the tea bar, leaving them covered in mud and silt.”

Club stalwarts Chris Woolfall and Jack Wolfenden are at the ground attempting to start off the mammoth clean up job and United say all help is welcome ahead of tonight’s England v Italy Euro 2012 clash and then throughout the week.
