EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Ossett Town moved quickly on Saturday night to promote from within after assistant manager Clive Freeman left Ingfield.
Freeman, pictured, informed the First Division North club's committee that he was stepping down to concentrate on his work and family commitments after their 3-0 home defeat to Warrington Town.
Manager John Reed wasted no time in appointing Freeman's successor after the reverse with player-coach Dave Merris stepping up.
The Infielders say they will appoint a new first team in due course and Ossett Town chairman James Rogers paid tribute to Freeman in a statement announcing his departure.
Rogers said: "I would like to put on record my thanks to Clive for the tireless work he has done since arriving with John in February of this year.
"We are disappointed to lose a man of his stature in the game but fully understand and respect his reasons for making this decision. Clive Freeman will be welcome back to the club at anytime."
