Ashton United are set to pull out all the stops to promote the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's green credentials after teaming up with their local branch of B&Q to launch an aluminium can recycling scheme.

The Premier Division's Robins say they'll be mobilising fans at Hurst Cross and their families and friends via the club's social media to promote the new environmental partnership with the B&Q at the Snipe Business Park in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Entitled 'Together We CAN Do It' and launched last weekend, the scheme will see both the club and the store encouraging fans and customers to collect aluminium drinks cans and bring them along for recycling to the football club on match days or the B&Q store on any day of the week.

B&Q will be promoting the recycling scheme to their customers, over 10,000 per week, via flyers attached to till receipts while the Robins will be using their broad social media presence to encourage their 6500 plus followers on Twitter, friends on Facebook and website membership to get involved.

Ashton United's vice chairman Steve Hobson said: "The club is delighted to be able to play our part in this community initiative. We are hoping to encourage people across the borough to get behind a project that will benefit everyone in the long term, and we are exploring the potential to offer rewards to groups and supporters who are collecting the cans."

He added: "Ashton United has a strong team ethic throughout the club. We want the local community to join our team. Together we CAN do it!"

Alan Sneddon, general manager of the retail giant's local branch, said: "My staff and customers, together with neighbouring businesses, have all embraced this idea and are busily collecting cans from family and friends. We hope to be able to recycle huge numbers of cans. There is a collection point at the store for everyone to bring in their contribution."
