Gunnell bags captain's armband

Scott Dundas has named former Stafford Town and Stafford Rangers defender Spencer Gunnell as his captain for the new EVO-STIK League season.

One of Newcastle Town's success stories last season while on loan from Rangers, the appointment of the center-half, pictured in action against Hednesford on Tuesday night, was confirmed on the official Twitter account of the Scholars on Tuesday.

Dundas, who fought off a clutch of clubs for his signature in July, opted for Gunnell after he skippered the Scholars in their pre-season friendlies against Heath Hayes and Hednesford Town.

Fellow center-half Jimmy O'Neill, who captained the EVO-STIK League South club in their other warm-up games, was also named by Dundas as his vice-captain for the 2017-18 campaign.
