Riley succeeds Josh Brehaut who left the role due to securing a promotion at work.
The former Abbey Hulton United manager played a big part in helping Abbey Hulton achieve promotion to the North West Counties Football League two years ago. In their first season, they finished 13th under his guidance.
He stepped down as Abbey Hulton manager in December 2018 with the club sitting 3rd in the North West Counties First Division South at the time.
Manager Ryan Austin said: "We are delighted to get Dave on board with us, he is someone that I've known for a long time and, have got on very well with him. Despite not actually working with him on the pitch.
"He left Abbey Hulton last December, so he hasn't been involved in the game for a while. However, he is keen to get back into the game.
"He has massive attention to detail and, he will be a big appointment for us."
Riley added: "I'm delighted to join Ryan and his team at Kidsgrove Athletic. When I left Abbey Hulton United, it was for personal reasons.
"Ryan gave me a call asking if I wanted to join him as Assistant Manager and, I was delighted to do so.
"I've now done a few sessions with the lads and, they have come back looking really sharp and, I can't wait to get the new season started and, help the club kick on from there."
