Leaders hail management duo

By David Watters

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League leader Buxton have been hailing the coaching of manager Martin McIntosh and his number two Tim Ryan following the transfer of defender Danny Burns to Gateshead.

As part of the deal for the 6' 5' teenager who'd made eight appearances for the EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division's Bucks since arriving in the summer, Gateshead agreed to allow him to remain on loan at Silverlands for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old joined a growing list of Buxton players who've been developed by McIntosh and Ryan when he switched to the National League outfit for an undisclosed fee.

The centre-back follows in the footsteps of the highly-rated Marc Roberts at Barnsley, Shaun Tuton, currently on loan at Grimsby Town from Barnsley, Ash Palmer at Guiseley, Craig King at Salford City and Liam Hardy at Darlington. Burns isn't the first Bucks player signed by Gateshead manager Neil Aspin who took Roberts to Barnsley when he was there.

Originally from South Yorkshire, the Rotherham-based teenager, pictured, spent his junior years with his home-town club. He was released by Cambridge United in the summer after loan spells with Cambridge City, Lowestoft Town and Bishop's Stortford last season after a broken leg hindered his progress in 2014-15.

Hailing McIntosh, pictured with Buxton chairman David Hopkins, and his assistant, a club spokesman said: "Great credit is due to manager Martin McIntosh and his assistant Tim Ryan for the progress made by these players in their time with us. Martin has a better record in transferring players to the benefit of the club than any Buxton manager since the time of the late Bob Murphy 30 years ago.

"These transfers show Buxton to be a club where young players are encouraged, thrive and are helped to build their careers. In Danny's case, he can continue here for the next eight months, learning from Martin and Tim and from the experienced players around him while the team is not weakened in the hunt for honours."

He added: "We also know that eventually Danny will be moving to a good club with a fine manager who will help him to develop further, just as he did for Marc Roberts."

The Bucks, away at Ilkeston on Saturday, have also been strengthening their attacking options with the signing Evan Garnett on a four week loan from Alfreton Town.

The 22-year-old, who has also enjoyed spells at Worksop Town, Ilkeston, Belper Town and Kidderminster Harriers, came through the Burton Albion academy, his scoring exploits at reserve team level earning him a professional contract with the Brewers.
