Leaders sign Reds legend!

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League high-flyers Stafford Rangers have signed former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland striker John Aldridge for a charity fundraiser.

'An audience with Aldridge', who made over 600 appearances in the Football League, including 83 for the Anfield club, hitting 50 goals, is kicking off at Marston Road on Friday, March 11.

The 57-year-old born and bred Scouser, pictured, earned just short of 70 caps for the Republic of Ireland and was the first player to have a penalty kick saved in a Wembley FA Cup Final in 1988 when the Reds were famously beaten by giant-killing Wimbledon. His tally of 330 Football League goals is still the sixth highest in the history of English football.

'Aldo' was signed by Liverpool in January 1987 for £750 000 from Oxford United after kicking off his career at South Liverpool and then Newport County in order to fill the boots of the soon to be departed Ian Rush.

Despite being at Anfield for only a short time, it is a testament to his ability that he is still considered one of the best goalscorers to wear the red jersey of Sunday's League Cup finalists.

After going on to endear himself to fans of Real Sociedad in Spain and Tranmere Rovers, he later managed the latter, guiding them to Worthington Cup final in 2000 when they lost narrowly to Leicester City.

The charity event is being promoted by Stafford Rangers Independent Supporters Trust (Stripes). The evening's line-up at the First Division South leaders also includes comedian Tony Roscoe, along with raffles, quizzes and a sports memorabilia auction.

Tickets are priced at £20 each include hot food, with bookings for individuals and groups of up to eight or ten.
