The online vote to mark the Northern Premier League's 50th anniversary season in 2017-18 by choosing the 'Top 100 Players' and 'Team of all Time' from the last five decades stood at 972 registered votes at 6.30pm and by 7pm had risen to 980 since voting started last Tuesday night.
Nearly 2,000 players were originally nominated by fans, players and officials in October before a panel of judges drew up a final shortlist of 200 for the public poll. Since opening six days ago, every player has picked up multiple votes with many coming in from Football League clubs including Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday as well as host of former NPL clubs like Fleetwood Town, Darlington and FC United of Manchester.
Perhaps surprisingly in the age of Twitter and social media, voters continue to register their choices almost equally between the EVO-STIK League's official website and Facebook and Twitter pages. A pen pix guide to the club legends in line to earn a place in the first history of the Northern Premier League accompanies the poll to help voters make their choices ahead of 7pm polling deadline on Friday 22 December.
Entitled '50 Glorious Seasons - A History of the Northern Premier League 1968-2018', the book is being penned by official historian and statistician Dominic McKenzie and will be out within weeks of the 2017-18 anniversary campaign ending after the players are unveiled next April at the 2018 Player of the Year Awards in Barnsley and then honoured in June at the NPL's end of season awards night in Blackpool.
