Former Stockport County boss and Champions League winner Dietmar Hamann is backing Marine’s ground development appeal.

The Liverpool legend and German international is to be guest of honour at a fundraising dinner the Mariners are organising to raise £50k for ground development at the Arriva Stadium on Friday November 2. Hamman will recount tales of their famous 2005 Champions League victory in Istanbul and Mariners Chairman Paul Leary is delighted.

"We are delighted that Dietmar has agreed to attend our event as our main guest and I look forward to meeting him and hearing of his many exploits and adventures with Liverpool including of course that famous Champions League victory in 2005," said the Chairman of the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division side. "This is an important fundraiser for our football club and early indications are that there is already much interest with the event still two months away."

Friday’s news comes after Marine’s charity fundraiser Peter McCormack, pictured, raised close to £1000 for ground work on his 187 mile cycle to Blyth Spartans last Saturday.

The Evo-Stik NPL’s answer to Bradley Wiggins is a director and safety officer at the Mariners and peddled to Northumbria to raise funds for the ground development.

To make sure he made the game in time for kick off, he set off on Friday morning and wrote a live blog on the way whenever he took a breather. McCormack, who is also the chairman of the club’s Supporters Association, has raised thousands for the club and Multiple Sclerosis Trust in recent years including once riding all the way from Blackpool to Paris for charity.
