Loan star will wait for chance

New King’s Lynn Town midfielder Gary Mills says he has no divine right to go straight into the Linnets' Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side, writes Greg Plummer.

After completing a three-month loan deal from Boston United on Thursday, an honest Mills, 32, told the Lynn News on Friday that he was happy to wait for his chance at the Premier Division outfit.

Lynn are away at Witton Albion on Saturday and Mills declared: "I’m not coming to the club thinking that I’m going to get straight into the team. I will have to earn the right to play and may have to be patient before I get in. Once I get my opportunity it’s up to me to take it. I think I will bring experience to the Lynn team. I like to organise and try to keep things simple."

Mills, who became Boston United Dennis Greene’s second summer signing in 2013, has found himself out of favour at The Jakemans Stadium following an injury-hit pre-season. The much-travelled midfielder made only one senior appearance for the Pilgrims — in the Lincolnshire Senior Shield defeat to Gainsborough Trinity on August 10.

"For one reason or another, the manager at Boston United made it perfectly clear to me that I wasn’t going to be playing," said Mills. "I just wanted to go and play for a manager and a club who wanted me. I had a couple of offers to stay and play at Step Two with other clubs, but I just want to go out and enjoy my football again. Lynn are a great outfit. Setch [Gary Setchell] has got them organised and strong and there is a great team spirit."

The former Lincoln City captain departed Sincil Bank following a knee injury picked up at the mid-point of the 2012-2013 season. He began his career at Rushden and Diamonds and went on to enjoy three spells with the Irthlingborough-based club. Mills has vast experience with other spells unfolding at Crawley Town, Kettering Town, Tamworth, Stevenage Borough, Mansfield Town and Bath City. He also spent a brief loan stint with Forest Green Rovers and helped lead Nuneaton Town to promotion from Conference North, via the play-offs, in 2011-2012.

On the possibility of staying at Lynn after his three-month loan deal expires, Mills added: "We will have to wait and see what happens. I will never shut the door fully on Boston United as the fans made me feel very welcome during my time there, but things would have to change if I was to go back."
