Long distance behind striker's exit

By David Watters

Workington striker went into Tuesday night's draw at Whitby Town in the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight without Tom Kilifin after the striker asked for his registration to be cancelled on the eve of the big match.

After a disappointing week, including back-to-back 3-1 defeats against Matlock Town, joint-manager Dave Hewson reluctantly agreed to let the 23-year-old go before the 1-1 draw at The Turnbull Ground after holding talks with the player.

The former Lancaster City frontman, who admitted he hasn't been at his best since arriving at Borough Park in the summer, cited the commute from his Lancaster base for home matches and training as the main reason he felt jaded.

Hewson told the club's fans he hadn't wanted to lose the forward who had still been targeting a 15 goal haul for the season despite a disappointing start that had seen him find the net just once in six starts and seven appearances as a substitute.

Hewson said: “He came to us with a good reputation and we felt Tom would be an asset to the squad. For whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out for the player or the team, unfortunately. Tom has enjoyed his brief time with the club and got on well with the squad and the supporters. He sends his thanks and good wishes to everyone at Borough Park.”
