Macclesfield forward earns dream Football League move

National League champions Chesterfield have announced the signing of Macclesfield forward Kane Drummond on a 12-month deal.

The 23-year-old will join the Spireites ahead of their promotion back to the Football League, having scored 19 goals in 41 appearances for the Silkmen during the 2023/24 season.

A former Liverpool youngster, Drummond first joined Macclesfield in November 2022 following three years at fellow Northern Premier League side Warrington Rylands.

Drummond netted 18 goals in 31 appearances for the Blues during the 2021/22 season and picked up the Northern Premier League Player of the Season award. He scored nine goals in 18 matches at the start of the following campaign before making a mid-season switch to the Stadium to link up with former Rylands manager Dave McNabb.

Drummond's latest move will see him play in the Football League with newly-promoted Chesterfield, who sealed a return to the fourth tier for the first time since 2018 when their 97-year stay as a Football League side came to an end.

After several seasons of play-off disappointment, the club managed to get the job done in emphatic style this term, winning 31 of their 46 league games and scoring 106 goals in the process.

Discussing his move to the Spireites, Drummond said: “These opportunities don’t come around a lot. This club is everything I believe in.

"I just want to push on, go on the pitch and make [Paul Cook] proud. I can’t wait to get on the pitch and show the fans what I am made of.”

He becomes the second Macclesfield player to join Chesterfield in as many seasons, following in the footsteps of James Berry.

Berry made the move in August 2023 on a three-year deal, earning Macclesfield a club-record undisclosed fee for his services in the process.

Drummond admits he sought some advice from Berry before opting to make the move up the football pyramid.

"I asked him some things about what it's about and how it made him feel," Drummond added.

"I knew, with the things that he said, that I wanted to come here as well."
