Magpies make 'Movember' appeal

Chorley’s moustachioed duo Jamie Vermiglio and Tom Williams are calling on fans to back their ‘Movember’ efforts and sponsor their bristles before the annual charity event comes to an end next week.

The two midfielders have been growing their facial hair since the turn of the month to help add to the millions already raised worldwide since ‘Movember’ was launched back in 2004 to tackle prostrate and testicular cancers.

Williams, pictured left, said: "It’s for a really good cause and people have been really generous so far. A fan came up to me and handed me some money after a match on Saturday after he saw my moustache. It’s a fun way of raising money and some of the lads were saying that there was no chance that I could grow facial hair so I thought I would prove them wrong!"

At the start of the month the League’s official fans Facebook group launched a campaign for clubs to raise £20,000 between them for Prostate Cancer UK and the Institute for Cancer Research by encouraging fans, players and staff to grow their facial hair.

Grantham Town’s management team led by joint managers Wayne Hallcro and Jimmy Albans have all been avoiding razors. Along with the rest of the bench team of Dennis Rhule, Mick Hogg and Paul Albans plus Grantham Secretary Pat Nixon, the Gingerbreads have raised £641 so far between them. Elsewhere, Evo-Stik NPL First Division South sides Coalville Town and Halesowen are two more clubs backing the campaign with fans and players taking part.

Last November more than £70 million pounds was raised as more than a 100,000 men nationwide took part. This year the Evo-Stik NPL Facebook group say they want to show what a league from the North of England can do when united.

Spokesman James Heyes said: "It was time we united to show what fans and clubs of a league from the North can do when bonded together. Players, fans, officials, anyone who are doing their bit to help out should all let us know."
