Marginson - "Every game a cup final"

FC United of Manchester update, by Andy Walker

FC United manager Karl Marginson is backing his players to make the end-of-season play-offs but, given how tight it is at the top of the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division, he reckons every game between now and the end of the season will be like a cup final.

He's also drawing inspiration from FC United's vital win last week against their fellow promotion rivals. "The scenes at the end of the Hednesford game last Saturday sum up what this club is about, with players and fans celebrating together," said Marginson. "Not only was it an important three points, but we had also received the great news about the £1.6m community shares target being hit. The players live for this club, just as the fans do, so any kind of news like that definitely has a positive effect on them too," he said.

"I think we showed (against Hednesford) that we have what it takes to get out of this league, despite a couple of late chances for them. James Spencer has pulled off some great saves of late and he earned his money again with a top stop late on that secured our three points. He is the best keeper in the league and he has proved that time and again this season.

"I keep saying it, and it is a cliché, but every game from now until the end of the season is a cup final. We have to win each one. Worksop come to Gigg Lane on Saturday with no pressure on them and they will be keen to upset our apple cart. I know we have the players to make the play-offs and the team spirit at this time of the season is absolutely first class. We have players that not only play at a high standard, but they also get what this club is about - and that will be crucial as we enter the end-of-season run-in," Marginson claimed.
