Matlock keep young midfielder for new season

Matlock Town have announced they have retained the services of midfielder Ethan Cartwright for the 2023-24 season.

The 21-year-old signed for the club back in February from Guiseley, having also played on loan at Belper Town last season.

Since signing for the Gladiators, Cartwright has made 17 appearances for the club, starting in all but one of those games.

In one of those, he was sent off against former club Belper. He was sent off just 22 minutes into the match, after committing a last man foul.

Manager Martin Carruthers believes he has a good attitude, and will only get better during his time at Causeway Lane.

“He’s a great lad with a great attitude,” he said. “A box to box player with tons of energy.

“I feel there’s lots more to come from him for he can play in any position in the midfield area.

“He did well at what was a difficult time for the club. I feel there’s goals in him, more assists in him and will get better going forward.”
