Miller to lead search for stars

Ambitious Spennymoor Town have unveiled Tommy Miller Senior as the new head of recruitment at the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League promotion-chasers.

The father of assistant manager Tommy Miller Junior, pictured, has more than 40 years of experience working in the Football League at a number of top clubs around the country including Hartlepool, Queens Park Rangers and Middlesbrough.

Miller, who has been tasked with using his extensive player and club knowledge to bring the most exciting talent he can find to The Brewery Field, is looking forward to forging strong links with local footballing academies and becoming a key cog in driving the club's future recruitment following his appointment on Tuesday.

He said: “Spennymoor Town is progressive, ambitious and has an excellent chief executive and manager, who I’m looking forward to working with. The club is looking to sign players from further afield to entertain its good core of supporters.

“Non-league is an enjoyable challenge for me after 41 years in the Football League. I am also passionate about having a strong input on the club’s academy and developing the younger players, having set up the Hartlepool United Youth Development System 19 years ago, which is still bearing fruit today."

He added: "I’m also keen to be working with the local professional clubs to develop links at both junior and senior levels.”

Officials at the Moors were quick to hail the arrival of Miller as another signal of the club’s intent to continue their upward drive.

Manager Jason Ainsley said: “I’m delighted that Tommy has chosen to join us despite lots of offers from other clubs. His work alongside the chief executive and myself to bring new players to the club will be invaluable and he’ll be a huge help to the players in our academy set up.”

Spennymoor Town chief executive Bradley Groves said: “There’s not a player or person in football that I’ve mentioned to Tommy that he doesn’t know everything about. Many of them he knows personally.

“I’m pleased Tommy chose us over other suitors, many of whom were in higher divisions, and I look forward to the boost he’ll give our promotion push this season and beyond.”
