Mintcakes salute frontline fan

Kendal Town are hoping Royal Engineer Adam Wilson will get some time off over the festive season from defusing bombs on the frontline in Afghanistan to check out his hometown club’s results while relaxing in the Mintcakes shirt they’ve sent him for Christmas.

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's Premier Division Cumbrians say they’re ‘proud and privileged’ to support Lance Corporal Wilson, pictured taking a break on his tour of duty.

A former pupil of Kendal's Heron Hill Primary and Kirkbie Kendal Secondary which both overlook the club's Parkside Road stadium, he's been in the army since 2002 and is three months into his third tour of Afghanistan clearing routes of IEDs, Improvised Explosive Devices.

The 25-year-old ‘clearance operator’ destroys hidden explosives and command wires controlling a robot known as a ‘Talon’ to keep routes clear and during preparations for military operations against insurgents.

Thousands of lives have been saved by bomb disposal teams and Kendal Chairman Haydon Munslow revealed that along with the new Mintcakes shirt, the club has also posted their latest team photo and an invite to attend the first game he can make when he returns from duty to his wife Leigh and three children.

Munslow said: "I was delighted to hear from Adam who grew up and went to school just a stone's thrown from our stadium. I read with great pride about this local lad's important work and his support for our club.

"To be able to send this brave young man a Mintcakes home shirt was my privilege knowing he will be spending his Christmas on the front line working to preserve the peace and the season’s football entertainment we all will enjoy here at home.

"Good luck Adam and thank you for all you are doing for us this Christmas. We hope to see you at a game next time you are home on leave."
