Monday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Stamford AFC took full advantage of Gresley FC`s depleted squad after the exit of manager Damion Beckford-Quailey at the weekend to virtually ensure themselves a place in the EVO-STIK League South play-offs on Monday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney

The Moatmen had been hit by the resignation of their manager and chairman once league survival had been assured and the majority of their first-team squad also walked out, leaving caretaker boss Gary Norton to field a mixture of reserve and U18s players.

And before they could settle, the Daniels took the lead at the Zeeco Stadium inside the opening minute when Ollie Brown-Hill slotted home the first of a hat-trick. Henry Eze made it 2-0 after 24 minutes when he headed home a Jake Duffy free-kick and when Eze was brought down in the area eight minutes later, Brown-Hill converted the resulting penalty.

Eight minutes after the break, Eze scored his second and Stamford’s fourth and sub Callum Ball made it a nap hand just past the hour-mark. The rout was completed with Brown-Hill completing his hat-trick in the last minute.

The win leaves Stamford needing just a point from their final game of the season at home to Cleethorpes Town to secure their top six spot. They were also in action on Monday night, sharing a 1-1 draw with Carlton Town at the Bill Stokeld Stadium.

It was a tale of two penalties, with Curtis Bateson having his 49th minute spot-kick, awarded for a foul by Riece Bertram on Alex Flett, saved by Jack Steggles in the Millers goal, but the Cleethorpes man was first to the rebound and he fired home to give the visitors the lead.

Ironically, it was Flett who brought down Bertram in the area with less than three minutes remaining that saw Carlton level from the spot, Tyler Blake making no mistake from twelve yards.
