New Year's Day First Division North action review

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North

A fine display of attacking football, combined with an intensity that the hosts and current Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North leaders could not match, saw New Mills come away from Mossley with a tremendous 4-0 victory, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The goals aarived from Daryl Weston after eight minutes, a fabulous 30-yard strike from Daniel Grimshaw four minutes later and two more from the live-wire Chris Luby in the 33rd and 66th minutes. The Millers are now in fifth place after their headline win.

Second-placed Skelmersdale United's derby at Prescot Cables was postponed, but third-placed Trafford were unable to take advantage and were held 3-3 at Moor Lane by neighbours Salford City.

Michael Oates opened the scoring by giving Trafford a seventh minute lead that Danny Heffernan and Nathan McDonald turned round for City to lead 2-1 by the 52nd minute. Andy Smart equalised on 73 minutes before McDonald struck again four minutes later with his second to make it 3-2 to City, only for Melford Knight to level three minutes from time.

Danny Gregson's late equaliser earned Lancaster City a deserved share of the spoils in the derby at the Giant Axe against high-flying Clitheroe. Darren Green scored the first goal for the Dolly Blues after nine minutes before Gregson cancelled out two goals for the visitors by Jack Higgins and Chris Mason with just eight minutes remaining.

Ossett Albion lost 0-2 at Dimple Wells to near-neighbours Ossett Town. A crowd of 295 saw Town dominate the first half as they were quicker to the ball than Albion and moved it round well.

In the 14th minute they got their reward when a ball over the top caught the Albion defence out and James Eyles placed his shot across keeper Adam Rhodes. Albion competed better in the second half and created a few chances but were unable to get back on even terms. Then in the 84th minute substitute Grant Darley made the game safe for Town.

Lowly Wakefield gained a massive three points, despite a Curzon Ashton onslaught and six extra minutes. It looked like another bad day at home for Wakefield when Kristian Dennis netted for Curzon after five minutes following errors in the Bears' defence.

But Wakefield came back into the game, and on the stroke of half-time Andrew Fieldhouse intelligently took a quick free-kick to equalise. Early in the second half Lee Turner extended the Bears lead, and then it was all hands to the pump as Curzon piled on the pressure.

Ramsbottom United edged the derby at home to Radcliffe Borough by the odd goal in five, thanks to Jon Robinson, Phil Edghill and Dominic Smalley – Matt Crooks and Simon Carden replying for Boro, while Burscough's Liam Caddick scored the only goal at home to Bamber Bridge just past the hour-mark.

Bottom-markers Garforth Town and second-bottom Goole AFC shared an uninspiring goalless draw, while Harrogate Railway and Farsley FC shared a 2-2 Station View draw – the visitors coming back from 2-0 down after Rob Youhill and Nathan Cartman had given 'Rail a cushion by the 22nd minute. David Stead on 37 minutes and then Adam Priestley on 56 pulled the visitors back on level terms.

Warrington Town started the new year with a disappointing performance going down 2-0 at home to Birkenhead-based outfit Cammell Laird, whose goals came from Aaron Bowen on 56 minutes and Michael Grogan on 79 minutes.
